Stainless steel is NOT rust proof! It’s very good, but salt water presents special problems. Wire and fittings for standing rigging can be exposed to strain, vibration, oxygen deprivation and abuse. Insurance companies know that and regularly impose a 10 or 12 year life span.on standing rigging.
Shiny and new it sparkles in the sun, but it needs oxygen to form a protective surface coating. Tape it over and you encourage corrosion by oxygen deprivation. Plastic coated safety lines look nice but can corrode away inside the plastic and break without warning.
